W5: Future Shopping and Retail 2060

Present Situation:

Today’s shopping and retail experience are constantly evolving due to the evolving of advanced technology over time. There are two options where people can shop, which are online shopping and physical shopping. Online shopping, while convenient, but it has several limitations and challenges for customers. Physical shopping, while inconvenient, but it contains several challenges like online shopping too. So, both options are the same where they both contain inevitable trouble.

Key Challenges:

One of the major challenges of shopping in a physical store is that customers may struggle with issues like long queues due to certain festivals like Chinese New Year or other factors like limited product promotion. Limited product availability and high operating costs are also the challenges of shopping in a physical store. However, a major challenge of shopping online is customers often lack the physical sensory experience of toughing, testing, seeing (in a physical way), or trying items physically. Many customers also face issues such as inaccurate sizing, wrong product, slow delivery, and inconsistent customer service. For example, the product may arrive at its destination late due to various reasons, such as delays in the transportation process, or even product damage due to uncertain causes.

Future Vision:

Imagine shopping and retail 30 to 40 years from now, where shopping becomes fully immersive, personalized, and eco-sustainable.

Creative Solution:

 1.  AI Personal Shopping Assistants

An AI personal assistant that assists customers in either physical stores or online stores. It can provide good suggestions on products for customers based on customer needs and preferences. Not only that, it can help customers to customize versions of items and compare prices of different items.  Customers must fill in a quick simple survey form about their personal body traits for AI personal assistant as a reference for it to assist them while shopping. The assistant also uses body scanning to ensure perfect sizing.

Why this matters?

People are struggling in choosing the best item that fits them while shopping. Many customers end up buying the wrong size, wrong style and even poor-quality items. AI assistant can help to solve this problem.

Implementation:

The retail industry could install smart mirrors and body scanners in stores. They could create a survey form about customers’ personal body traits. Also, they could collaborate with advanced technology industry to connect AI to retailer databases for stock, pricing, and customization options.

2. On-Demand 3D Printed Products

Instead of mass-producing goods, retail centers will have 3D printing labs where all the daily necessities, clothes, shoes and so on are produced after a customer place an order.

Why this matters?

Retail waste is considered a huge global issue, where fast fashion and mass production produce tons of unsold inventory each year. However, on-demand printing can eliminate extra stock and ensures perfect fit and personalization for customers.

Implementation:

Retail centers could build 3D printing hubs in shopping malls. They could train staff to operate printers and materials efficiently. However, they could develop digital product templates for clothing, shoes, accessories, and other daily necessities, and offer material choices such as recycled fibers and biodegradable plastic.

3. Mixed-Reality (MR) Shopping Experience Centers

Shopping mall becomes immersive spaces where customers can engage with AR and VR for shopping purposes. By using AR and VR, customers can “try on” outfits virtually, look how furniture would look like in their own homes, or walk through themed environments while exploring products.

Why this matters?

Customers could have an immersive shopping experience, not just transactions. MR makes people think that shopping is fun while it also helps to reduce the need for physical inventory.

Implementation:

Retail centers could install AR projectors and VR stations in the shopping malls. They can create virtual environments that match stores themes. However, they could create a motion tracking that can let customers interact with virtual products. They could collaborate with tech companies to build realistic 3D product models.

Reflection:

This vision was inspired by observing current issues on either physical shopping and online shopping such as long delivery times, inaccurate size, misleading product name, long queues, and so on, which cause many inconveniences and dissatisfaction towards the shoppers. Thinking creatively in future shopping and retail experience helped me realize how advanced technology can bring shopping becomes fully immersive, and eco-friendly.
