W2: Future Transportation 2060

Present Situation:

Transportation plays an important role in our daily lives. We rely on transportation to go to a place that we wanted for working purposes or even travelling around the world in all kinds of vehicles. For example, cars, buses, trains, motorcycles, and so on. While these kinds of vehicles allow us to travel relatively fast from one distance to another, they also come with several challenges and limitations that could possibly affect our daily life and also harm to the environment.

Key Challenges:

One of the major challenges in transportation is traffic congestion. In many countries, heavy traffic could cause frustration for commuters that could possibly delay their arrival time to a destination. However, climate change can be triggered by transportation sector. It will contribute significant carbon dioxide to environment that could possibly cause air pollution which will lead to climate change and harm to public health too. However, another challenge is the lack of efficient public transport options in many areas, especially rural areas, where people may have limited access to reliable and affordable transportation services. Lastly, road accidents are also a challenge in transportation which contributed by human error.

Future Vision:

Imagine transportation 30 to 40 years from now, where people no longer sitting in long traffic jams due to traffic congestion, people can arrive at their destination smoothly by relying on self-regulated road networks. Instead of petrol-powered cars polluting the air, most of the vehicles are electric or powered by renewable energy.

Creative Solutions:

1. Autonomous Electric Vehicle Networks

In future 2060, all vehicles are fully electric and self-driving. To prevent traffic congestion, these vehicles are connected to a central traffic management system that monitors road conditions. Instead of buying a car and owning it, people can use shared autonomous fleet available on demand, which is like today’s ride-hailing services.

Why this matters?

Autonomous electric vehicles are benefits in reducing carbon emission, accident rates, and number of cars on the road which causes road congestion (Perception partners, n.d.).

Implementation:

Government would need to invest in electric charging infrastructure, create regulatory frameworks that ensure safety and reliability. However, government would implement public education to build trust in autonomous systems.

2. Smart Public Transport with Real-Time AI Coordination

To monitor passenger demand, weather conditions, and current traffic levels, AI helps integrate public transport such as buses, trains, and trams into a smart mobility network. However, the system helps adjust schedules, routes, and vehicle frequency in real time. It can allow commuters to receive a most suitable and reliable route suggestion via mobile apps at any time.

Why this matters?

This makes public transport more experiential, attractive, and also helps to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.

Implementation:

Cities need to develop digital infrastructure, including sensors, GPS systems, and centralized traffic control centers. However, it is crucial that technology firms collaborate with transportation authorities.

3. Urban Air Mobility (Aerial Taxis and Drones)

Air mobility solutions such as aerial taxis and drones can provide fast transportation above crowded roads in a crowded urban area. However, drones can be categorized into two drones which are small passenger drones and larger cargo drones. Small passenger drones allow carry individuals or small groups of people across short-to-medium distances, while larger cargo drones only allow deliveries and emergency medical transport purposes.

Why this matters:

It helps reduce the cases of traffic congestion and also enables rapid response services in emergencies.

Implementation:

Safe air corridors must be designated, along with new regulations and training systems. Engineers must ensure noise reduction, safety protocols, and affordable operational costs.

Reflection:

This vision was inspired by observing how traffic accidents happens around the world, the number of traffic congestion, and also air pollution. Thinking creatively helped me realize that transportation can be evolved into a more experiential, attractive, effective, safer, and a more efficient system if we combine it with advanced technology, and thoughtful planning. This exercise help me understand that a good transportation is important to every person’s life.
